American Patrol ran out a ready winner on the tapeta at Wolverhampton on Monday under Adam Kirby who is riding out of skin at the moment. He'd been working well at home and we were confident he could make his presence felt in what looked a winnable race. He was going on at the finish so a step up in trip could be on the cards next time out and it probably wont be too long before we see him out again as he has come out of his race in good form.
On Tuesday we sent three up to Wetherby, a long drive but worth it when you come away with a winner or two and that proved the case as Most Celebrated and Fingerontheswitch both did the job in very good style. The ex-Godolphin inmate couldn't have been any more impressive and we are very excited about him going forward. Tom Scudamore gave him a beautiful ride and he crossed the line with a big smile on his face - always a good sign. He was very complimentary about him and his delighted owners were also there to see him win so well. He's one of the better juveniles I would have trained and he'll probably have one more run before a tilt at the Triumph at the festival.
Fingerontheswitch has always had the raw ability but hadn't looked in love with chasing until his superb round of jumping which helped him win so well, again receiving a very good ride from Tom Scu. He appreciated the ease in grade and application of a tongue tie and hopefully with that confidence-boosting win behind him he will only improve on that. Dan - his regular rider and groom was especially happy with the win and it made the five hour trip home go by a little more easily.
It was nearly a perfect three out of three with Master Burbidge putting in an improved display and only finding one too good in the handicap hurdle. He appreciated the drop back in trip and looked to be going best two out but was just outpaced up the run-in. There was a good distance back to the favourite in third so hopefully he can go one better next time out.
Our other runner was bonny grey mare Actlikeacountess at Leicester. We had hoped she could show a bit more this time around and she was running a solid race before in-running carnage two out handed her the advantage. The leader fell which brought down another horse and hampered one or two others and thankfully Sean managed to steer her out of trouble. It still wasn't over though as she was strongly challenged up the run in but I was really happy with how she battled on to stick her neck out and hold on for the win. If the horse has the right attitude then you are half way there and she certainly showed a strong will to prevail. A treble on the day and it's days like these that remind you what you work so hard for all year.
That win took us to 78 jumps winners for the season and with our flat string also going very well we really couldn't be happier at the moment, especially with some of the bigger names out this weekend including The Young Master in the Cleeve Hurdle at Cheltenham and Southfield Royale who goes up to Doncaster for the Sky Bet Chase. May the good run continue.
